Connects Science to Children’s Lives
Reading and discussing informational texts provides rich opportunities for children,
to connect science to their experiences and interests. We see this in the following excerpt
where Ms. Tarkington explores children’s ideas about evaporation during the reading of
Science is Everywhere (Yu, 2006). As Ms. Tarkington engages children in the discussion
she uses technical vocabulary (“prediction”) that the children learned previously to guide
children’s contributions.
