As Miles and Huberman (1994) point out, "Sampling involves not only decisions about which people to observe or interview, but also about settings, events, and social processes...The conceptual framework and research questions determine the foci and boundaries within which samples are selected" (p. 37). Bearing this advice in mind, the researchers initially set out to find a set of organizations which were at different stages of implementation with regard to EFP. Five firms recognized as major players in the furniture industry were identified. A single industry was used to control for differences in processes and materials which might confound the results of a cross-industry study.
