Additionally, in a study of Italian drivers, an estimated 277,000 individuals were injured or killed as a result of human error caused by distraction; from 2012 to 2014, distracted driving was the leading cause of crashes in Italy.(2) Statistics like these prompted the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray La Hood to proclaim that distracted driving was a “menace to society,” calling for action to reduce preventable deaths and injuries.(3)
