Use of music to improve patients’ hospital experiencehas a long history in medical care, including byFlorence Nightingale.6 Music was first described beingused to help patients during operations by Evan Kane7 in1914. Several studies have investigated music’s effect onemotions and neurophysiology.8–10 Pre-recorded musicthrough headphones, musical pillows, or backgroundsound systems can be a non-invasive, safe, and inexpensiveintervention compared with pharmaceuticals, and can be delivered easily and successfully in a medicalsetting.11 Music has frequently been investigated in thecontext of recovery from operative procedures, andseveral randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have shownpositive effects on patients’ postoperative recovery.12,13This use of music differs from music therapy, which is acognitive rehabilitation method.14
