In a July 2009 game, Cincinnati Reds star Brandon Phillips hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball (Sheldon 2009). Expecting that the ball would be caught, Phillips trotted lazily towards first base only to realize that the ball had been lost in the sun by the right-fielder. It dropped to the ground. By the time Phillips tried to reach second base to atone for his inattention, he was thrown out. Clearly, Phillips would have easily obtained a double had it not been for his initial lack of hustle coming out of the batter’s box. In response to his carelessness, manager Dusty Baker benched the Gold Glove winner and sent a clear message that shirking would not be tolerated, even by a player who, in 2008, had signed a four-year, $27 million extension to his contract.
