Since Butler (1980) wrote his original article on destination development, his lifecycle model has been widely discussed, applied, and accepted as a conceptual framework for analyzing the historical progression of resorts from a variety of perspectives (Buhalis 2000). The five stages in Butler’s theory are illustrated in Figure 1. A few tourists, simple facilities, unspoiled nature, and undisturbed local communities, characterize the first stage called Exploration. In the next stage,
