二十世紀以前,外語教學大多採用「文法翻譯法」。但從本世紀開始,不同的教學法相繼地問世。首先「文法翻譯法」被「直接教學法」(1910至1920年代)所取代,繼而「閱讀教學法」(1920至1940年代)產生。在第二次世界大戰期間,美國發展出所謂「軍中外語教學法」(the Army Method),此法後來成為「聽說教學法上」,曾在1950至1960年代在美國和世界各地風靡一時;但後來仍遭「認知教學法」取而代之。
