This material can be placed into two-quart (1.8 L) cardboard or plastic containers. Soil samples may yield arthropod specimens as well as provide samples for biochemical assay of decomposition fluids. Soil samples should be approximately 4 in. cubes or cylindrical cores (100 ml) of material from areas associated with different body regions (head, torso, and extremities). Soil samples of this size should be placed into paper evidence bags, or plastic evidence containers. Soil samples (approximately six total) should be taken from under, adjacent to, and up to 3 f (l m) from the body, noting the origin of each sample in reference to the position of the body (Figure 3.33a and b). These samples should be labeled according to the technique described for the insect vials.
