In past earthquakes, the main damage to reinforced concrete buildings was caused by the destruction of columns. The reasons include shear stress, column end spelling, vertical rebar flexion, and formation of weak layers. Several collapses on one or more floors of a building are attributed to the destruction of the column (e.g., sketch 19). The beam-pillar connection failure was also observed, as shown in Sketch 20.
