This unit of study, “A Habitat for Monarchs,” is fully integrated with the second grade science curriculum and is designed using the Engineering Design Process. This is a series of steps that engineering teams use to guide them as they solve problems. The design process is cyclical, meaning that engineers repeat the steps as many times as needed, making improvements along the way. The engineering process has five steps for students to follow. These include the following steps: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve. However, it is important to know that the process is meant to be flexible.
