The eye lashes or sebaceous gland areas of the face may harbor follicle mites, Demodex folliculorum var. hominis (Simon) (Acari: Demodicidae). A few lashes are typically plucked and examined microscopically if the presence of this mite is suspected. Estimation of a minimum time of colonization (TOC) range may be determined based on whether or not these arthropods are still alive.
