What does it mean to say that I “listen” to my own experience? There is no ready set of words to describe this sense dimension. If a person has been blind or largely so from birth, the only way we can tell him about the sense of sight will be by unsatisfactory analogies with hearing and touching or the other senses. Figuratively speaking, most of us have been' blind (or blindfolded) from our earliest years. We have learned very little about the sensing of our inner being, and often we have been taught to ignore it or devalue it. (“You don’t really feel that way,” “That isn’t whatyou really want, now is it?” “Don’t be so emotional,” “It doesn’tmatter what you want; you’ve got to deal with the real world.”)Thus, when I talk about this sense modality which we have not fully known we had, my words are awkward hand-me-downs from other experiences.
