Both the cost of maintenance and the role of SHM exemplified as above demonstrate the importance of this project, in which a brand-new health index based on heterogeneous sensor data fusion will be established not only for real-time health monitoring of bridge structures, but also for cost-effective service life prediction and resilience estimate. If this project is successful, the research outcomes will reshuffle the current design of SHM system and improve the management of bridges, producing tremendous economic and social benefits worldwide.
