Such is our lot, or so many believe. Moral collapse or heavy-handed paternalism; these are the options that tolerance offers those of us who are morally mediocre and who cannot, as a result, resist the instability that comes packaged with virtues difficulty. And yet many are convinced that these options are essential to tolerance itself, not consequences of ordinary instability and commonplace moral weakness. They are, after all, its common yield. Tolerance must then be a vice, just as the praise it receives nevertheless must be resented and its friends resisted.
