In the face of the inadequacies of both definitions of the sentence, the student must make the best compromise he can in termsof the purposes of his study. For the teacher of English it is convenientto recognize two kinds of sentences, which will be calledhere verb sentences and verbless sentences. The latter can be definedonly notionally; but the former can be defined, in part atleast, formally, and consequently can sometimes be made clear tostudents who have no "sentence sense." Many teachers find itexpedient to drill students for a long period in the writing ofverb sentences before permitting them to experiment with verblesssentences.
