Schumann also produces constant harmonic novelty in the piano part. In the postlude of "Hor ich das Liedchen klingen" (When IHear the Little Song) from Dichterliebe, he writes an arpeggiated figuration with multiple suspensions to express graphically anduniquely "the intolerable grief" of the poet (see Chapter 3,"The Piano"). The counterpoint of the emerging melodic lines and shiftingrhythmic schemes reflects Schumann's brilliant idiomatic use of the piano.
