Finally, the design of visual displays should not be a mindless activity. It may take some effort to come up with an effective visual display. Indeed, it is not often that a researcher's first attempt to display data is the best way to display those data. It is usually necessary to create successive representations of the data before finding the one that does the best job of communicating the results of interest in a way that is most compelling. As is true with good writing, revision also helps with good visual displays.
