The marketing director for Scottish Salmon Farmers Ltd. is confusing transaction exposure with economic exposure. By pricing in British pounds, the company eliminates its transaction exposure. But it still has operating exposure. As the yen falls in value, if the firm maintains its British pounds price, the yen price of its fish rises and Japanese customers will buy less fish. If the British pound price is reduced to maintain market share, the profit margin falls. Either way, British pound revenues and profits fall. Conversely, a falling British pound will boost the British pounds profitability of selling to Japan.
