To investigate our hypotheses, we first computed correlations to inspect the associations between all variables. Next, a multivariate regression analysis was used to investigate how fear of failure predicted perceived psychological stress and the three burnout dimensions, respectively. Finally, to examine the multidimensional aspects of fear of failure and its relationship with burnout, we conducted a latent profile analysis (LPA) with auxiliary variables (Asparouhov & Muthen, 2014; Clark & Muthen, 2009; Wang et al., 2005). LPA is a person-oriented analysis used to uncover homogenous subgroups of people with similar profiles. These subgroups are considered as latent because the participants membership are not directly observed, but instead determined based on the interrelationships among the indicator variables. We used LPA to identify distinct profiles of athletes based on their levels of fear of failure.
