untestable, hence unscientific. However, some of them can be refined and become the subject
of experimental test. In particular, the modern version of the idea of bodily balance is the physiological concept of homeostasis, the constancy of the milieu intérieur that Claude
Bernard conceived two millennia later, and Walter Cannon refined a century after Bernard.
