The long term orientation looks at the links between the present and the past and this helps to indicate there preference. Hofstede’s research shows that a country which scores low has a more traditional approach when it comes structure and order where as if they score high then it means that they are more open to taking risks and view the future with a more practical eye. Research shows that the US score much lower meaning that they favor strong links with the past and tradition as well as how things are done. This reinforces the US results when looking at the previous dimension which is uncertainty avoidance. The UK however with a score of 51 indicate that while they do have some kind of preference for order and structure they are potentially open to taking some sort of risks with a more practical approach to the future. However, the index of 51 is a balance index in long term orientation, it shows the United Kingdom is balance in two choice that maintaining traditions and roles in history or absorbing new thing for getting development and readying for challenge in future.
Because long term orientation index of the United States is lesser than the United Kingdom, and they both are developed country, it means American companies prefer to make short term orientation relative to British and American companies want to get benefit in short time. For example, companies use the quarterly income statement in United States (Shen, 2013). This case shows American companies want to know corporate information change in a short time, this is a basis of corporation operation in the United States, therefore corporation has same basis in other things, for example, employee performance.
Because the American index of long time orientation is 26 and it is lesser than the United Kingdom, therefore American culture is difficult changed relative to the United Kingdom. However, some culture benefit the company in the context of the automotive industry going from the UK to US. First, environment protect role is different. Since America refusal to sign Kyoto Protocol in 2001, which because American government think it will affect car industry and other energy industries (BBC NEWS, 2001), and Europe sign Kyoto Protocol, it results in car corporate is unlimited in car pollution roles. Second, American Pick-up truck culture can help British car industry development. Many American use the Pick-up, for example, the Ford factory produce a Pick-up in each 49 second (The Economist, 2009)and if British car corporate can design new Pick-up and suitable energy limited technology, it will become a power production.
