After verifying the SG of the rinse/reclaim, the appropriate pumps will start. Flow sensors in all the feed lines plus the cooling water loop must verify the flow or the system will shutdown. The SG of the mixture will be checked, compared to the desired set point, then the pump speed varied accordingly to achieve the desired value. Normally the R/R flow is held constant, the flow of acid is varied. After a preselected time period, the SG is again determined and speed adjustments made. During the adjustment period, all the mixed acid is directed pack to Tank R1. When the measured gravity is within +/- 0.005 of the required value, the mixed acid is diverted to the appropriate mixed acid storage tank. Should the gravity drift outside the desired range, the mixed acid will diverted back to Tank R1, and the system will continue to make adjustments in attempt to achieve the desired value. Should the system not be able to achieve the desired value over a preselected period, 10-15 minutes, the system will shut down and an alarm shall sound.
System will continue mixing until the selected tank is full. It will then search until it finds another tank that has reach the low level setting.
5.2 Collection/Distribution
5.2.1 Tanks
The conventional system will typically include the following storage tanks;
Description No. of Tanks
Rinse/Reclaim 2-3
Fill Acid (1.150 SG) 1-2
Refill Acid (low gravity-1.320) 1
Refill Acid (mid gravity-1.345) 1
Refill Acid (mid-gravity-1.390) 1-2
Pasting Acid 1
Total 7-10
Rinse/reclaim Tank R1will be approximately 4,000 gallon (recommend 5000-6000gallon to solve overflow issue before plant shutdown initial filler stop but dumper still works), fiberglass (preferred) or poly construction, conical bottom, dome-top tank. All other tanks will have a volume of approximately 5,000 gallons, fiberglass (preferred) or poly construction, flat bottom, dome-top tanks. Table 1 lists the typical connections and other items to be provided on the tanks. Note that the fittings listed include 2-4 spares for future use. Alternative designs may require a different number of type of fittings, vendor proposal shall include a table listing the number and sizes of fittings to provide on each tank. All tanks shall be designed for 1.9 specific gravity use, and fabricated from premium resin (vinyl ester) fiberglass. If necessary, tanks shall also be designed to address any seismic requirements for the specific plant location.
A 3/16” think polypropylene pad shall be placed under each tank.
All tanks shall be equipped with ultrasonic level sensors and mercury-free level float switches as back-up, for automated operation of the Acid Mixing System.
Tanks R-1 through T-7 will be equipped with seal-less mag-drive centrifugal pumps. The pumps shall be utilized to recirculate the acid around the tank and to distribute the acid to the production floor. Motor size shall be sized to deliver 50 gpm of acid to the equipment on the plant floor. The pumps on the Rinse/Reclaim Tanks shall be equipped with basket strainers to protect the pumps and mixing equipment downstream. A basket strainer shall also be installed on the gear drive pumps for the Rinse/Reclaim Tanks. All pumps shall be equipped with flanged flex connectors on the suction and discharge sides of the pumps. Pumps shall include pressure gauges on the pump discharge. Pumps shall be installed on polypropylene stands, elevated so the base of the pump is above of the containment wall on the acid mix room.
Tanks T-1 through T-7 shall each be equipped with pneumatic control valves to automatically control the filling and distribution of acid. Each tank will have one distribution control valve, and a separate feed valve for each acid mixing skid (up to three) being provided. Tank R-1 shall be equipped with up to four (4) pneumatic control valves to automatically control the filling of acid and water. Tank R-1 will also be equipped with a positive displacement air diaphragm pump to manually transfer accumulated solids from the bottom of the tank to the Lead Sulfate Sludge Tank in the Lead Sulfate Recovery Area. All air diaphragm pumps shall include pulsation dampeners.
