The communication between adolescents and parents is worth more attention as moretechnology tools are pervasive in our daily life. Little research has been found that explicitlydiscusses the impact of communication technologies on family relationships (Rudi, Walkner,& Dworkin, 2014). Some studies specified the intervention of certain mediums, such associal media (Kanter, Afifi, & Robbins, 2012), Internet (Williams & Merten, 2011) andthe comparisons of different media (Lundy & Drouin, 2016), to evaluate the interventionof computer-mediated communication toward family relationships. This study comparedthe adolescents’ use of two communication technologies—instant messaging and socialnetworking sites—in communication with parents and concludes that the preferences anduses of specific communication medium may have a moderate impact on the interactionprocess and consequences of adolescent–parent relationship. The attempt of comparingvarious interpersonal communication media also extends prior assumptions of media effectas most studies were pertained to the effects of specific communication media (Ledbetteret al., 2016). The effects of media modality, as rooted in the Media Multiplexity Theory(MMT), are evaluated based on the cognitive process and can be linked to the interventionsof adolescent-parent relationship.
