Using Orthotics An orthotic is a device for correcting biomechanical problems that exist in the foot that can potentially cause an injury. The orthotic is a plastic, thermoplastic, rubber, Sorbothane, or leather support that is placed in the shoe as a replacement for the existing insole. Ready-made orthotics can be purchased in sporting goods or shoe st ores. Some athletes need orthotics that are custom made by a physician, podiatrist, athletic trainer, or physical therapist. These are more expensive but can be well worth the expense if the athlete's feet cause pain and discomfort, especially when exercising(Figure 6-23).
