Once institutionalized, children/adolescents grow with an identity of being orphaned or abandoned. They have difficulties in being recognized as individuals belonging to someone or somewhere. Research shows that a prolonged period of institutionalization interferes in the sociability of children/adolescents and in the maintenance of emotional bonds in adulthood. Due to these aspects, there should be no delay in the solution of the problem for the child/adolescent. Furthermore, there are cases where the process to decide whether they can return to their families of origin or whether they should be adopted has not been initiated.
