The study of peer relationships is complex, and several factors must be considered. Social status or the frequency of selection by peers as a preferred or nonpreferred playmate is one indicator of students' relationships. Howes' (l 990) research in one elementary school revealed that the social status of typical students remained stable between kindergarten and Grade 3. Less is known about the stability of the social status of children with disabilities, particularly when they are in the upper elementary grades. When viewed as a group,fifth- and sixth-grade children (preadolescents) with disabilities have been found to be of low social status, and viewed as less socially acceptable by their nondisabled peers (Marotz Ray l985). When viewed individually, how ever a great deal ofvariability is likely in the pattms and stability of social status.
