Recently, Pereira and Waldron [245] formed different biodegradable films through the incorporation of CNC and citric acid to hemicelluloses extracted from wheat straw. On the one side, CNC improved tensile strength and modulus, water resistance, and water vapor barrier. On the other side, citric acid presented concomitant plasticizing and crosslinking effects. The optimal conditions for a minimum water sensitivity and permeability, withgood tensile strength were found to be 5.9 wt.% CNC and 30 wt.% citric acid.
