Habitat management has been applied broadly to many agricultural systems17,21,22. In the present study, habitatmanagement was found to be efective at maintaining tea plantation yields. Intercropping on the HM tea planta-tion might be responsible for the improved yield. Shading, which was provided by intercropping on the tea plan-tation, is benefcial to tea plant growth and improves tea plantation yields23. In addition to macrophanerophytes, hedgerow intercropping, such as with Eupatorium, also increases the yield by fertilizing the soil24.
