Like other histories, this one has personal dimensions. My own respect and affection for Harry Broudy, both the man and his work, grew over twenty years of working with him on various projects. As I trace influences of his thinking on discipline-based art education I would be remiss if I did not include some flavor of Broudy as a personality. He was, as I got to know him, near seventy, and his white hair and his face with its piercing gaze and substantial nose and white moustache gave him all the presence of the distinguished scholar that he is. He is usually quite soft-spoken and invariably polite and kind, though to see him wrinkle up that nose and confront someone in anger is truly an awesome experience. In his dealings with teachers he emphasizes his own “simple mind” and often expresses bewilderment at the power of art. He is able to talk to people from many walks of life and prefers to present his ideas as though he speaking to a “well-intentioned school board member.” This ability to take very difficult ideas from philosophy and make them available to the lay reader is one of his special gifts that has made his work so effective.
