● insertion of a system of pipes beneath the highway, to allow passage of surface and groundwater flows from upstream source areas, identified on aerial photography (see Figure 9.7).
The following measures were considered essential for the long-term sustainability of the wetlands – failure to implement them is likely to result in long-term shrinkage of wetland habitats downstream and ongoing degradation in habitat and water quality:
● Connection of the impounded open water pond north of the highway, in Phase 2, to wetlands in the lower reaches of Phase1, to permit drainage and improve water quality
● Protection of sources of fresh ground- and surface water in the vicinity of the site
● Removal of dumped material from the site, with priority being given to chemical or organic material
