Decorticated ramie fiber (variety R-1449 types) contains 27.27% of gummy material, analyzed by the Doree Scheme (Garner, 1967). For degumming, various alkalis, viz. sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium potassium carbonate, calcium carbonate and barium carbonate, comprising of a wide range of base dissociation constant (Kb values shown in Table 1), ranging from minus one to minus thirteen, were chosen. A higher negative value of Kb implies a lower basicity. Therefore, the optimum concentration and time of all these alkalis were determined (Table 1) at 90◦C, keeping in mind that degumming in terms of residual gum content remains within 2–6% for its better and effective processibility (Mukherjee, 1998).
