Thermal measurements of the roughing stand 1 at Mannstadt’s long product mill were undertaken by
BFI. The results achieved are good, despite the covering water film on the rolls because the thermal
imaging was undertaken on the exit side of the passes. Three examined grooves were divided into
nine measuring zones. Thermal input at the first passes as well as at the reversing passes is where the
highest level occurs. The measurements with and without cooling were carried out. Selected results
can be seen in Figure 3.1.4. The evaluation presents an optimisation potential adapting the existing
cooling application of German hot rolling mill for an optimum cooling nozzle application.
