Acute medical illnesses such as stroke (), Parkinson’s disease (), Pancreatic cancer (), coronary heart disease (), and myocardial infarction () are also associated with depressive symptoms. Neurological findings suggest that cerebrovascular disease (particularly ischemic small-vessel disease) may be related to the onset of late-life depression (). Although it is unclear whether these illnesses directly cause depression or the depression is the result of the life changes brought on by the illness, recovery form these diseases (when possible) will help alleviate depressive symptoms.
