The ocean absorbs most of the heat from global warming. In the past two decades, the ocean warming rate at all depths of the ocean has accelerated dramatically. As the ocean warms, its volume will increase, because water will expand with the increase of temperature. Melting ice sheets will also lead to rising sea levels, threatening coastal and island communities. In addition, the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide and keeps it away from the atmosphere. But more carbon dioxide will make the ocean more acidic, thus endangering marine life and coral reefs.
