Monitoring/This is possibly one the most promising applications of UAVs for plant conservation. By detecting and measuring change, UAVs allow for responsive and timely conservation interventions as well offering a flexibility and temporal resolution suited for many plant conservation applications (Anderson and Gaston, 2013; Zhang et al., 2016). An area can be revisited repeatedly before, during or after critical events. This provides an extremely efficient means to monitor both human induced changes (with negative environmental consequences as well as interventions for protection and restoration), as well as those related to natural events (e.g. seasonality and climate change) (Pimm et al., 2015).
