Diagnostic studies such as videofluoroscopy, modified barium swallow, manometry, and endoscopy may be used to evaluate mechanical abnormalities underlying dysphagia. However, until recently, no condition-specific instrument has been avail-able to measure the effect of dysphagia on QOL. In the present study we used the swallowing quality of life (SWAL-QOL) outcomes assessment tool to determine the impact of thyroid surgery on swallowing-related QOL in patients with thyroid disease.
