After Wash Appearance- (AWA) Garments and Fabrics
LL Bean Method
(Surface Change: Fuzzing/Pilling)
Purpose: The purpose of this test is to determine the surface change like fuzzing or pilling after 3 launderings.
Equipment: Washer and Dryer- Recommended by the AATCC Detergent-Tide
Scale
4 lb load Ballast
Unwashed Specimen for Control
Lighting equipment for viewing test specimens (Refer to AATCC 143-Fig. 1 for viewing board and lighting to use)
Procedure: Wash/dry (3x) the specimen according to the care instruction submitted by the requestor.
Conditioned the specimen for four hours after its been washed and dried 3x in the room temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 65% Relative Humidity.
Evaluation: For Garments and Fabric
• The overhead fluorescent light should be the only light source for the viewing board. All other lights in the room should be turned off.
• First, hang the washed and unwashed specimen side by side in the viewing board as seen in AATCC 143, at the eye level of the observer.
• For Garment- bring 6 inches down so that the upper shoulder and neck seam are 6 inches below the observer eye level.
• For Fabric- bring the top edge of the fabric down so it is 6 inches below the observer.
• The observer is to stand directly in front of the specimen 2ft. away from the board.
• Write the observation using the below description and assessment guidelines.
