The sensors in [2] are deployed randomly to form a connected network. However, due to the complexity of the underlying protocols, the simulations in [2] are performed only for sensors deployed in the grid architecture. We adopt this approach in our simulations as well. Therefore, the sensor part of the network has the grid topology (circles that are not filled in Fig. 1). The sensors can communicate only with their first neighbors in the grid, within their sensing radius Rs which is equal to the grid size. To communicate with the sensors, the actuators utilize short-range communication to notify sensors of their presence, and status in the grid cell. We assume that the range is at least equal to the grid diagonal so that actuators are able to communicate with sensors in the same grid from any part of a grid cell.
