These films start slowly and then build sales, typically due to Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations as well as positive wordof-mouth. Figure 14 shows the sales trajectories of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Each started with weekly sales around or under $1 million. At their peaks, they crested $10 million in weekly sales. For both movies, total US sales topped $120 million, and they stayed in theaters for more than six months.
