Sue I try to go to London for a week every summer so I can go to the Proms, which are classical music concerts performed every day from July to September. I always choose a week when there’s some music by my favourite composer, Tchaikovsky. I usually stay with my sister and we go together. We never book tickets; we always go to the Royal Albert Hall on the day, and get the cheap tickets, which are only five pounds. But you have to stand. If we don’t get a ticket, we go out for a meal or go to the cinema instead.
Heather I suppose the music I like is folk music, which is quite traditional. Every year, I meet up with some of my old university friends and we go to the Winnipeg Folk Festival. It’s great. It’s not just traditional Canadian folk music; you can hear music from all around the world. Some of the musicians use instruments that you don’t usually see in a typical rock or pop band, so the sound is really different. You can buy a ticket for one day and just see a few performers. Or you can buy a five-day ticket and see everything.
Haru Every summer, I go to Niigata with my friend for the Fuji Rock Festival. We always have a great time. It lasts for three days and we always take our tent so that we have somewhere to sleep. There’s a great campsite. It always gets really full, because the festival is very popular. There are some great bands there, a mixture of Japanese and international performers. This year there’s Björk and the Nine Inch Nails.
Phil I’m quite lucky because I live in Cooperstown, New York, so it’s easy for me to travel to Glimmerglass to see the operas there. There are performances in the afternoon and evening. The Festival theatre is in the countryside, about eight miles away, so I leave work after lunch and I drive there. I love being there, and watching the singers in their beautiful costumes and listening to their incredible voices. For me it’s the best thing about summer, especially when they do operas by Verdi.
