Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati says he offered to resign after a bomb attack on Friday that killed the police intelligence chief. The Prime Minister said Saturday that President Michel Suleiman asked him to remain in his position and that he had agreed. He spoke after an emergency captain meeting on Saturday. On Friday, opposition leader Saud Hariri had urged the Prime Minister to resign after the bomb attack killed police intelligence chief Wesam al-Hasan and seven others. Mr. Hariri blamed the Prime Minister for the attack. Demonstrators in Lebanon have closed roads to protest the bomb attack. The government has declared Saturday a National Day of Morning.
International peace diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syria's foreign minister Saturday in Damascus. The two were expected to discuss the possibility of a temporary cease fire in the conflict between Syrian forces and rebel groups. No details of the meeting had been released. The United Nations and Arab League diplomat also planned to meet with President Bashar al-Assad and opposition leaders during his visit to Syria. Mr. Brahimi is pushing for Syrian officials to support a cease fire during the four-day Muslim holiday of Id al-Adjha that begins October 26th.
