LateBuddhist Monasteries in the Gangetic PlainExcavations at Nalanda have revealed eleven multistory viharas and several largetemples. The main temple was rebuilt and enlarged several times, with the latestconstructions over 15 meters high.Both the main temple and other temples consisted of shrines containing a Buddhaimage surrounded by subsidiary images, smaller shrines, and votive stupas.All of the viharas at Nalanda follow the standard square layout. All but two lie nextto each other in a line running north/south (see Figure 7.2).25
