LateBuddhist Monasteries in the Gan

LateBuddhist Monasteries in the Gangetic PlainExcavations at Nalanda have revealed eleven multistory viharas and several largetemples. The main temple was rebuilt and enlarged several times, with the latestconstructions over 15 meters high.Both the main temple and other temples consisted of shrines containing a Buddhaimage surrounded by subsidiary images, smaller shrines, and votive stupas.All of the viharas at Nalanda follow the standard square layout. All but two lie nextto each other in a line running north/south (see Figure 7.2).25
