海伦·凯勒(1880年6月27日-1968年6月1日)，出生于亚拉巴马州北部一个小城镇——塔斯喀姆比亚。是美国女作家、教育家、慈善家、社会活动家。毕业于美国哈佛大学拉德克利夫学院的海伦凯勒，是一个聋盲人。
她一岁半时突患急性脑充血病，连日的高烧使她昏迷不醒。当她苏醒过来，眼睛烧瞎了，耳朵烧聋了，嘴巴也不会说话了。
由于失去听觉，不能矫正发音的正误，她说话也含糊不清。对于一个残疾人来说，世界是一片黑暗和寂静，在这样的情况下要学会读书、写字、说话，没有强大的记忆力，简直是不可能的事。但是，海伦·凯勒没有向命运屈服。她为了能清楚地发音，用一根小绳系在一个金属棒上，叼在口中，另一端拿在手上，练习手口一心，写一个字，念一声。为了使写出来的字不至于歪歪扭扭，她还自制了一个木框，装配了一个滑轮练习写字，当然安妮莎莉文老师也付出了很大的贡献，她让海伦将手放在自己的喉咙上，让海伦感受发声的震动的声音。

不过，莎莉文老师认为，光是懂得认字而说不出话来，仍然不方便沟通。可是，从小又聋又瞎的海伦·凯勒，一来听不见别人说话的声音，二来看不见别人说话的嘴型，所以，尽管她可以发声，但也没办法说话。
为了克服这个困难，莎莉文老师替海伦·凯勒找了萨勒老师（郝博士），郝博士教导她利用双手去感受别人说话时嘴型的变化，尽管非常艰巨，不过，海伦·凯勒还是做到了。安妮教会她写字、手语。接着，莎莉文老师又在海伦凯勒的手心写下「水」这个字。当波金斯盲人学校的亚纳格诺先生以惊讶的神情读到一封海伦完整地道的法文信后，这样写道：“谁都难以想象我是多么地惊奇和喜悦。对于她的能力我素来深信不疑，可也难以相信，她3个月的学习就取得这么好的成绩，在美国，别的人要达到这程度，就得花一年工夫。”

在学习与记忆的过程中，她只有一个信念：她一定能够把自己所学习的知识记下来，使自己成为一个有用的人。她每天坚持学习10个小时以上，经过长时间的刻苦学习，还有不屈不挠的信心，使她掌握了大量的知识，能熟练地背诵大量的诗词和名著的精彩片段。到后来，一本20万字的书，她用9个小时就能读完，并能记忆下来，说出每章每节的大意，还能把书中精彩的句、段、章节和自己对文章的独到见解在2小时之内写出来。海伦的记忆力已经大大超过了普通人的正常水平。
据说，在哈佛大学读书的一个博士生听到海伦·凯勒的事迹后，很不服气，决定要和她比试比试。在严格的时间规定和教员的监督之下，他们进行了3轮比赛，博士生服了。他摘下博士帽，恭恭敬敬地戴在海伦的头上。经过学习，海伦突破了识字关、语言关、写作关，先后学会了英、法、德、拉丁、希腊五种语言，出版了14部著作，受到社会各界的赞扬与夸奖。
