Therapeutic StrategyA general consensus is that delivery sets should be changed every 12 hours. Formulae should be discarded if hang time is prolonged, for example during slow rates of feeding. Closed systems are now being used in continuous feeding to reduce the opportunities for contamination of the feed. In bolus feeding regimens, equipment should be single use only in agreement with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines. The importance of strict hygiene procedures in handling enteral formula and equip- ment was highlighted in a recent prospective study with diar- rhea affecting 18% of enterally fed patients, reduced to 6.5% in patients whom strict hygiene standards were observed.
