Consequently, the wide distribution of R. crateriformis was questioned by Penney & Racek (1968) when they cited, for example, the alleged record of R. crateriformis by Gee (1935) from Australia was actually Radiospongilla sceptroides (Haswell, 1883) and the record by Arndt (1930) from New Guinea was Radiospongilla hemephydatia (Annandale, 1909).
