A most important issue is whether wide-body trains can be accommodated within the structural gauge of the railway. KTH conducted an initial investigation on this issue [1, 2]. It was concluded that it would be possible to accommodate a carbody width of 3.4 -
3.5 m at “elbow height”, within the present structural gauges in Sweden and Norway, likely also in Denmark. It was assumed that the defined structural gauges could be used without excessive margins, partly using advanced gauging techniques based on simulations rather than simple and conservative geometric rules. It was also assumed that wide-body trains must not approach sidings and industrial tracks with loading platforms with upper edges typically 1.15 – 1.20 m above top of rail.
