Advanced drawing students continue to refine their observation skills, and gain more competence in naturalistic drawing. Our subjects mainly involve outdoor landscape scenes,
although the still life and human figure are occasionally included. Light and shadow properties are also emphasized in our instructional objectives which is exemplified in the
Baroque light, pastel rendering. Fine artists from the Baroque period to more contemporary styles such as surrealism and photo realism are introduced in slide shows. Students
are also encouraged to take their own photographs, as they strive to be more original in terms of content and rendering style. The required art works alternate between short,
observation oriented, drawing exercises to larger, more time consuming compositions. The class had a productive final week of the third reporting period. Studio time revolved
around a black paper rendering exercise and making progress on the Baroque light, pastel drawing, which will be due in the second week of the next reporting period.
Jerry's thoughtful, perceptive approach coupled with his solid work ethic allowed him to demonstrate fine growth and success in his rendering techniques. On the whole, his
drawing projects were strong, creative performances. His beginning landscape drawing involving the description of water reflections in a lake scene was especially a well
rendered accomplishment. One of his distinguishing strengths was his ability to utilize impressionist's techniques in creating more color variety in the water reflections that
dominated the landscape composition. His recent black paper drawing of the marvel comic character Thor, was also a superb, well observed achievement. To further improve, I
encourage Jerry to maintain his patience, and adopt a more observant approach which will allow him to methodically record subtle tonal changes a bit more productively. As we
move on to more demanding subjects, I encourage him to use his studio time efficiently, especially during the beginning outlining stage of the drawing projects. It is a pleasure to
have Jerry in art class again this year, and if he maintains his conscientious work ethic, he should have a rewarding semester.
