Increased accessibility to markets could conceivably more than compensate for any negative effects by increasing incentives

for organized and sustainable agriculture, silviculture, and land management in general. Extensive and intensive road networks must be differentiated. Whereas an extensive network of roads erodes incentives for sustainable
forestry and agriculture (by providing new cheap land to be mined), an intensive network of farm-to-market roads makes small-scale agriculture viable
(Schneider 1995). Agricultural incentives can have profound impacts on
forests depending on the stage of development. In the first stage, they have a
direct effect on the natural forest by encouraging the clearing of land. In later
stages, they may lead to incentives for managed silviculture.
