Psychopathy is synonymous with violence. As noted earlier, when laypersons hear the term “psychopath,” notorious serial killers commonly spring to mind (Edens, 2006). Moreover, in media descriptions, the words psychopathic and killer routinely go hand in hand. However, psychopathy can and does occur in the absence of official criminal convictions, and many psychopathic individuals have no histories of violence (Lilienfeld, 1994).
