Your Baby
The tiny baby floating inside you is now equipped with all of the internal organs, the heart being almost fully developed. The tail is gone, and the webbing between the fingers and toes has disappeared. The eyes are moving from the side of the head to the front, where they will eventually be located. If you could see your baby’s ears you would notice that they are getting their final shape and getting ready to hear the world. Your baby is preparing to make some noise, with the diaphragm emerging this week. If you’re carrying twins, you better be prepared for the duet they’ll be singing at birth. Your little baby is now about the size of a date.
Your Body
It’s during this week that your morning sickness will likely be the worst. However, it will most likely not get worse than this and it may even be gone by week 12. The hormones in your body may also cause erratic mood swings, and you may find yourself crying over spilled milk – quite literally. You may have started to put on some weight, and your pregnancy may even be visible (especially with twins). However, it is still early for others to really notice - except your loving partner who gently rubs your tummy every night. Because your body increases its blood volume by 40 to 50 percent during pregnancy, your veins might become a little more prominent.
Health & Tips
Remember that your amniotic fluid will taste like whatever you eat, and now that your developing baby regularly tastes the fluid, your little one will notice the onions and garlic in your diet. By the time you're 13 to 15 weeks pregnant, your baby's taste buds have fully developed, and he or she can start sampling different flavors from your diet. During the last trimester, your baby swallows up to a liter a day of amniotic fluid. This helps prepare your baby for breastfeeding, since breast milk also contains flavors from your diet. If you’re starting to feel depressed, and a change in diet or exercise doesn’t help, talk to your doctor. It’s quite common to feel depressed during pregnancy, but it is important to inform your doctor about this. Try going for a walk in the sunshine, as this will boost your endorphins – the feel good hormones.
Partner’s info
While changing pregnancy hormones are the source of mood swings for her, you may be surprised to find you’re having some changes to your disposition, as well. Be patient with yourself – having a baby is a big change for you, too. It’s normal to feel left out and anxious. Talk to friends and family to find out how they handled the life changes brought on by a baby-on-the-way. Learn more about pregnancy by reading, or join the visits to her healthcare provider. Get regular exercise and eat well to keep yourself feeling your best. Do something nice for yourself, or even better, for someone else, to improve your mood.
Twin/multiples info
At some point over the next few weeks, your healthcare provider may use a handheld Doppler device to listen to the baby’s heartbeat. Don’t worry if they can’t pick up a heartbeat just yet, it can take a few more weeks for this to be picked up by a handheld Doppler device. If your healthcare provider picks up two heartbeats, he will likely be brimming with excitement and will send you for an ultrasound to confirm his suspicions of multiples. If this ultrasound reveals two embryos, two heartbeats, two babies, then congratulations - you are expecting twins!
